Michael Oluwatobiloba Bolaji

Michael Oluwatobiloba Bolaji, professionally known as Tobi Bolaji, was born in Osogbo, Nigeria, on June 13, 1987. His artistic journey began in 2005 when he created his first painting, titled My Hen and Its First Chicken. Working with only a worn-out brush and a small stick, he demonstrated an early determination to create despite limited resources.

Recognizing his passion for art, a family friend introduced him to Nike Art and Culture, where he met Professor Bisi Fabunmi, founder of Iwalewa Art Gallery. Under Professor Fabunmi's mentorship, Tobi gained valuable knowledge of Abstract Art and was introduced to the rich artistic heritage of Osogbo. Through stories, teachings, and practical guidance, he developed a deeper understanding of visual art and the cultural traditions that shaped one of Nigeria's most influential art movements.

Driven by a desire to further his education, Tobi later enrolled at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). However, health challenges and family circumstances forced him to discontinue his studies. Despite these setbacks, his commitment to art remained unwavering.

Inspired by the lessons he learned in Osogbo, Tobi made a personal commitment to dedicate himself fully to his artistic practice. Throughout his career, he has focused on developing a distinctive visual language, refusing to imitate the styles of established artists despite commercial pressures. His work is characterized by originality and a strong commitment to creative authenticity.

While collectors and viewers have often expressed admiration for his work, its uniqueness has also presented challenges in the marketplace. Even when encouraged to adopt more commercially proven styles, Tobi remained steadfast in his belief that artistic integrity should never be compromised. His determination to create work that is both personal and distinctive has become a defining aspect of his career.

In 2022, Tobi experienced a significant personal and professional loss when fifteen of his artworks disappeared in Benin Republic. The incident had a profound impact on him and continues to influence both his outlook and artistic journey.

Today, Tobi Bolaji continues to create with resilience and purpose, drawing from years of experience, personal challenges, and the rich artistic legacy of Osogbo. His work stands as a reflection of perseverance, individuality, and an enduring dedication to authentic artistic expression.
